The Intag Cloud Forest Reserve is on the very biodiverse western slopes of Ecuador's Western Andes, about 2.5 hours from Otavalo. The Intag area is still rich in primary cloud forests, and alive with rushing white-water streams and rivers, and small towns and villages.

The former government tried to force them out of the forests, allegedly to protect the environment. Forests - among many other "services" - store huge amounts of carbon. The release of carbon from deforestation is one of the main contributors to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. REDD - Reduced Emissions from deforestation and forest degradation - is one of the „big new ideas“ to save the planet from runaway climate change. Under REDD huge amounts of money would be transferred for the protection of forest areas. Many REDD proponents favour raising this money through a carbon trading regime.
