How the palm oil industry is Cooking the Climate
Every year, 1.8 billion tonnes (Gt) of climate changing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are released by the degradation and burning of Indonesia’s peatlands – 4% of global GHG emissions from less than 0.1% of the land on earth.
This report shows how, through growing demand for palm oil, the world’s largest food, cosmetic and biofuel industries are driving the wholesale destruction of peatlands and rainforests. These companies include Unilever, Nestlé and Procter & Gamble, who between them account for a significant volume of global palm oil use, mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia.

Agrofuels and the use of Genetic Modification

http://www.genewatch.org

GeneWatch UK published a new report exploring the use of genetic technologies for the production of agrofuels (industrial-scale biofuels). The report questions whether the substantial investment being made in a new generation of agrofuels, often being developed using genetically-modified (GM) organisms and new GM crops, will solve the problems now acknowledged with the current generation.

E85 produziert mehr bodennahes Ozon als Benzin (SB)

http://www.schattenblick.de/infopool/umwelt/redakt/umre-110.html

Certifying the Uncertifiable (also available in Portuguese and Spanish)
FSC Certification of Tree Plantations in Thailand and Brazil
World Rainforest Movement - August 2003
Concern over the spread of tree monocultures and their certification is at the centre of this book. However, this concern is merely one part of much broader concerns concerning forests, forest peoples’ livelihoods and communities of living things.
By documenting and analysing the problem, this book, it is hoped, will help convince FSC that much needs to be changed in its approach to the certification of plantations.

Global Biodiversity Outlook 3

http://gbo3.cbd.int/

Global Biodiversity Outlook is the flagship publication of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Drawing on a range of information sources, including National Reports, biodiversity indicators information, scientific literature, and a study assessing biodiversity scenarios for the future [4MB], the third edition of Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-3) summarizes the latest data on status and trends of biodiversity and draws conclusions for the future strategy of the Convention.

GRAIN: Agrartreibstoffe a.k.a. Biotreibstoffe (englisch)

http://www.grain.org/agrofuels/

GRAIN has just published a special issue of Seedling which focusses on biofuels, or as we like to call them, agrofuels* - over 30,000 words of indepth analysis from around the world.
In the process of gathering material from colleagues and social movements around the world, we have discovered that the stampede into agrofuels is causing enormous environmental and social damage, much more than we realised earlier. Precious ecosystems are being destroyed and hundreds of thousands of indigenous and peasant communities are being thrown off their land.
This page (www.grain.org/agrofuels/) will provide a continued resource for documents, links and updates on the issues around agrofuels. To find out more follow the links on the right hand side of this page and below.

Jatropha Reality Check

http://www.worldagroforestry.org/downloads/publications/PDFS/B16599.PD…

The findings of the "Jatropha Reality Check" report include:

1) There are many media claims about the high production potential of jatropha, but these are rarely referenced or verified.

2) A study of hundreds of Jatropha farmers in Kenya shows low yields

3) Uneconomical costs of production

4) Jatropha requires significant rainfall or irrigation, and does not perform well in dry zones.

5) Jatropha is susceptible to many pests and diseases, contrary to claims.

5) The only way that Jatropha makes economic sense is as a fence, which is how it has been traditionally grown in Africa.

The report recommends that "all stakeholders carefully reevaluate their current activities promoting Jatropha as a promising bioenergy feedstock. We also suggest that all public and private sector actors for the time being cease promoting the crop among smallholder farmers for any plantation other than as a fence."

Palm Oil and Land Acquisition in Indonesia

http://www.sawitwatch.or.id/index.php?option=com_content&task=view…

Promised Land
Palm Oil and Land Acquisition in Indonesia:
Implications for Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples
"Biodiesel" is fuelling fast expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia. The study "Promised Land" examines the laws which regulate land acquisition for plantations and how these laws actually are applied. "Promised Land" finds that indigenous peoples are deprived of their heritage - their lands, forests, livelihood and cultures. Palm oil plantations already cover over six million hectares of land - most the ancestral lands of indigenous peoples. Plans now envisage the clearance of further 20 million hectares.
